JOSEPH A. DOWNS Joseph A. Downs, 84, Hardinsburg, died May 4, 2007, at Jewish Hospital, Louisville. He was born July 5, 1922, in McQuady, the son of the late Charles and Nettie Gertrude Hinton Downs. He was a retired deckhand, a WWII Army veteran, a member of St. Romuald Catholic Church and Hardinsburg VFW Post 5831, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Whitfill Downs; a son, Randall Joseph Downs; and a sister, Geraldine Bland. Mr. Downs is survived by five children, Larry (Sheila) Downs, Rineyville, Mickey (Anna Rae) Downs, Monticello, Mary Ann (Jimmy) Tate, Hardinsburg, Sandi (Johnny) Vessels, Rhodelia, and Karens Downs, Hardinsburg; nine grandchildren, Gail Smith, Randy, Brad, Chris and Brian Downs, Cheryl Elam, Jennifer Britt, Jeremy Vessels and Jess Carlson; two step-grandchildren, Ed and Tommy Tate; 15 great-grandchildren, Logan Smith, Thomas, Grace, Joseph, Austin and Kyndal Downs, Connor, Alexander and Sawyer Elam, Carissa, Caleigh and Ashleigh Britt, Cole and Clay Vessels and Lani Carlson; and five step-great-grandchildren, Dillon, Lacee, Collin, Cody and Ransom Tate. Funeral services will be held May 8 at 10 a.m. CT from St. Romuald Catholic Church with Father Tony Bickett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors performed by the Hardinsburg VFW Post 5831, directed by Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home May 7, 3-8 p.m. CT, and May 8 after 8:30 a.m. CT. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Romuald School.
