Norman Travers Gerkins, 82, Brandenburg, died May 31, 2007, at Baptist Hospital East Louisville. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and a survivor of the battle of Iwo Jima where he was the recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was ordained as a deacon at Hill Grove Baptist Church in 1949 and served in that capacity for 40 years many of which he served as chairman of the deacons. He was retired from the Post Engineers Plumbing Shop with the Civil Service at Fort Knox and a member of the American Federal Government Employees Union. Mr. Gerkins was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Jessie Gerkins, infant grandsons, John Travers and Michael Kevin Thompson, and son-in-law, Carl Heck. Mr. Gerkins is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, Esther Simpson Gerkins; four daughters, Norma Darlene (Art) Dash, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Sharon Diane (Rodney) Zeller, and Monica Arminda Thompson both from Louisville, and Kathy Annette (Robert) Veith, Brandenburg; three sisters, Wanda Halsey, Battle Creek, Mich., Ruth Thacker, Columbia, S.C., and Barbara Medley, Ekron; two brothers, Bill Gerkins, Ekron, and Edward Gerkins, Charlestown, Ind.; five granddaughters, Sami Pallans, Summer Thompson, Lori Zeller, Allison Garvey and Kristi Allen; and four great-grandchildren, Collin, Tristin, Krista and Mckenzie. Funeral services will be held June 3, at 2 p.m. from Hill Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in Buck Grove Cemetery, with U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard. Friends may call at the Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home June 2, from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., and June 3, after 9 a.m. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or to the Hill Grove Baptist Church building fund.
