James W. “Jimmy” Whitaker Jr., 77, formerly of Greenville, Ind., died July 25, 2007, at Jewish Hospital. He was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Louisville, the son of the late James W. Sr. and Mary (Russell) Whitaker. He retired from the U.S. Navy and worked many years at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville. He was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Brandenburg, and formerly of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Bradford, Ind.. He also was a member of the VFW in Brandenburg. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lenore Risen. Mr. Whitaker is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley (Alvey) Whitaker; a daughter, Marilyn A. (Keith) Crumbo, Martinsburg, Ind.; two sons, James W. “Jim” (Nancy) Whitaker III, Floyds Knobs, Ind., and J. Russell “Russ” (Shelly) Whitaker, Greenville, Ind.; a sister, Betty (John) Lanham, Louisville; two brothers, Eddie Whitaker, Clinton, Ind., and Tommy Whitaker, Louisville; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be held July 30 at 10 a.m. from St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Bradford, Ind. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Generations Funeral Home, 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, Ind. Friends may call at the funeral home July 29, noon to 8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Kosair Charities.
