NELLIE LOUISE HEAVRIN Nellie Louise Heavrin, 96 years of age died Sept. 21, 2007, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Ind. Funeral services were held on Sept.24 at the Kraft Funeral Home with burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Following the services, a luncheon celebrating Louise’s life was held at the home of daughter-in-law, Sharon Heavrin. Many of Louise’s favorite foods were served, including fried chicken and homemade chicken and dumplings prepared by Doris Heavrin. Born May 22, 1911, Nellie Louise Wilcox grew up in Meade County and married Samuel L. Hearvin Sr. in 1927. The couple lived in Meade County for many years before moving to New Albany, Ind., where Lambert owned and operated Heavrin’s Tree Service. Louise and Lambert were the parents of 12 children. Her husband and four of their 11 sons, Victor, S.L., Bill and Leonard preceded her in death. Louise loved family gatherings and she also loved to play cards. After a big family meal, she would quickly clear the table and ask, “Who’s ready for a good game of cards?” Her quick wit and sense of humor were ever present throughout her life. At her 90th birthday celebration when asked about walking with a cane, Louise replied, “Well it does come in handy. If I see a handsome man, I use it to trip him and if he tries anything, I use it to hit him.” At her 95th birthday party she looked around the bustling VFW Hall that had been rented to accommodate the more than 100 family members present, laughed heartily and nodded her head when one of her grandsons stated, “Grandma, you started this mess!” Ever feisty and blunt, Louise was quick to give unsolicited advice and tell her family members what they should or shouldn’t be doing. But only she had that privilege, as she was fiercely proud and protective of both her children and grandchildren. She is survived by a brother, James Wilcox, Valley Station, Ky., and seven sons and their families: Nick Heavrin, Springfield, Mo., Rodney Heavrin, Clarksville, Ind., Randy Heavrin, Lake City, Fla., and Joe Heavrin, Ted Heavrin, Jerry Heavrin and Pat Heavrin, all of New Albany, Ind. Her only daughter, Vivian Louise Holbrook lives in Payneville and seven of Vivian’s 10 children – Stanley Williams, Donnie Williams, Scotty Williams, Clint Williams, Kaye Stephenson, Faye Bennett and Ricky Williams and their families also live in Meade County. Daughter, Lois Wilson and her sons reside in Henderson, Other daughters, Martha Ruebelman and Edna Stephens and their families live near Pontiac, Mich. In addition to her children, Nellie Louise Heavrin leaves a legacy of 45 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, 60 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren. She was loved much and will be greatly missed by all her family. Louise’s healthy attitude, longevity and determined spirit gave real meaning to the words, “You Go Girl!” By granddaughter, Edna Louise (Williams) Stephens | This Weeks Obituaries | Obituary Archives |
