Derby excitement at Muldraugh Elementary
Submitted photo By T. PARKER The students and staff of Muldraugh Elementary celebrated the Kentucky Derby by having a hat parade. The PTO purchased everyone a hat to decorate, and the results were magnificent. The hats captured the Derby spirit and most resembled the unique and creative hats often seen at Kentucky’s most famous sporting event. To show off their hats, teachers and students circled the school grounds for the first ever Derby Hat Parade. The grand marshal of the parade was Marcia Gable, 1st-grade teacher and old grey mare. When asked about being chosen as the grand marshal, Mrs. Gable stated, “I’m honored being named the grand marshal, but more importantly I’m proud of our students and the effort they put into their hats, along with all of the other Derby and Kentucky lessons and activities we worked on this week.” Throughout the week, students in kindergarten through 6th-grade participated in activities and studies to learn more about the Kentucky Derby and our great state. Science lessons dealt with hot air balloons, social studies classes learned about the rich history of the Kentucky Derby, and math lessons dealt with ratios and percentages. Students not only had fun during their Derby celebration but also were able to gain new knowledge in a unique way.
