Ekron City Commission receives update on Derby Tank Car By SANDRA STONE During the Ekron City Commission’s last meeting of 2006, Mayor Gwynne Ison welcomed newly elected 5th District Magistrate Steve Wardrip to the meeting. She congratulated him on the election and said, “I’m really looking forward to what he’ll do for us in the entire 5th District.” Wardrip responded by saying he was looking forward to working with the commission to do what he could for Ekron and the district. “We’ll do the best we can do with what we’ve got to do with,” said Wardrip. “I think we’ll be able to work together and get a little more done.” Ison explained that Ekron is a small 6th-class city that faces its own unique set of challenges and told Wardrip he was always welcome at the commission meetings. “In order to get an idea of where we are and what we go through,” she said, “it’s important to attend at least a few meetings.” Mayor Ison also thanked outgoing Commissioners Don Ison and Terry Trent for their years of service to the city. In January, Rose Betlej and Joyce McHolan will be joined by new Commissioners Melena Shilts and Pamela Troutman. The commissioners were encouraged to be considering which position they’d like to take (i.e. ordinances, roads, parks and recreation) and move forward within the new year. With regard to the Derby Tank Car cleanup, Mayor Ison advised she had spoken with Nate Hancock who indicated Superfund is planning to move on to the next phase of the project. Shield Environmental Associates provided a report that evaluates the cleanup options available. The Superfund Branch will now direct Shield to develop a specific cleanup plan based on the options they think are the most cost effective and protective of human health and the environment. “At this point, I don’t know of any specific reason to meet with Nate,” said Mayor Ison, “but if it comes to that, we’re always right in his backyard when it comes to the job site.” Speed bumps have been placed on city roadways. Commissioner Ison recommended placing signs and parking bumpers on the rights of way to prevent motorists from going up on sidewalks and rights of way to avoid the speed bumps. All commissioners agreed this was a good idea and also agreed the speed bumps had greatly reduced the speeding problems in the city. Plans to install a basketball goal in the park have been put on hold until spring. An end-of-year salary adjustment of $50 each was approved for secretary Sandy Adams and treasurer Larry Berry.
