Greenwaves prepare for Shelby County in Snowball Classic

After dropping two games in the King of the Bluegrass Tournament, the Meade County Greenwave basketball team (4-3) will look to get back on track in the upcoming Farmer’s Bank Snowball Classic in Frankfort.

There have been recent complications with the event, as a team from Stone Mountain, Ga., was forced to remove itself from the tournament. The tournament pools are currently being realigned, so it is yet to be determined if Meade County will play three or four games.

However, according to head coach Jerry Garris, the Greenwaves are set to take on Shelby County in the first round Dec. 29.

The Rockets (4-3) began the season ranked 20th in the state by the Courier-Journal, but lost their last two games to Fairdale and Doss in the King of the Bluegrass.

“They are another top 20 team for us,” said Garris. “But, I like to see this kind of competition so that we know where we are at.”

Shelby County boasts size that the Greenwaves are not used to seeing, as the Rockets start a frontcourt highlighted by 6’6” Israel Chambers and 6’8” Eugene Wade.

“They are very big and very athletic,” said Garris. “But we want to be ready for that later in the season, so that is why we play these games. After the holidays, our record may not be glowing, but I think we will know a lot better about where this team stands.”

After winning their first four games, the Greenwaves have hit a rough patch of late, dropping their last four games and surrendering 64 points per game in those contests. Meade was eliminated from the King of the Bluegrass after losses to Male (59-38) and Franklin County (67-63).

“We have got to get back to competing like we were early on,” said Garris. “I haven’t seen that same fire in our last few games. We won’t see a lot of Males in our region, but we will see a lot of Franklin Counties, so it’s important for us to get some games under our belt and prepare for the rest of the season.”

Louisville Trinity date changed

The Greenwaves’ game at Louisville Trinity on Jan. 2 has been changed to Jan. 3. The location and time will still remain the same.

Shelby County players to watch

Israel Chambers, senior forward – The 6’6” forward has been the Rockets’ most dangerous offensive threat this year, averaging 15 points per game through Shelby’s first six contests.

Eugene Wade, senior center – Wade was named the 24th best player in the state preseason by the Courier-Journal. The 6’8” center notched 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks in only 18 minutes against Central Hardin in the first round of King of the Bluegrass.
