Solving the writing puzzle

On Feb. 15 and 20, 5th-grade students from across the county joined together to solve the writing puzzle, one piece at a time. To begin the day, the group was introduced to the idea of “reading like a writer.” This piece of the puzzle involves noticing what authors do when they write a story. With this concept in mind, students were introduced to six different traits to look for while reading. Showing these students six simple traits helped them realize how the pieces of good writing fit together. Giving students the tools for becoming proficient writers is truly powerful. Student work from this writing workshop appears in our Newspaper in Education special section in this week’s issue of the Messenger.
