The Meade County Board of Elections met April 9 with members Katrina Fitzgerald, Rosemarie Folden and Faye Miller present. Miller was sworn in as the new Republican board member following the resignation of Bruce Williams. Sheriff Butch Kerrick was unable to attend.

With the Primary Election Day on May 22, the board reviewed dates and deadlines. April 23 is the deadline to register to vote. In office absentee voting begins May 1. May 3 is election school for precinct workers. May 18 is the inspection of the voting machines. On May 21, voting machines will be delivered to their locations. And May 22 is Election Day.

For those casting absentee ballots, the following dates are important to note.

May 15 is the deadline to apply for a paper absentee ballot. Qualified voters may apply to cast their votes by paper absentee ballot at any time no later than the close of business May 15 (seven days before the election). Requests may be made by the voter or voter’s spouse, parent or child by phone, mail or fax.

Members of the Armed Forces confined to a military base on Election Day, who learn of that confinement within seven days or less of an election may make application to vote absentee in the clerk’s office.

In case of medical emergency within 14 days of an election, a registered voter may apply for a paper absentee ballot.

May 1-21: in office absentee voting. Any other qualified voter, who is not permitted to vote by paper absentee ballot and who will be absent from the county on Election Day, or a woman in her third trimester of pregnancy may make application in person to the county clerk to vote on a voting machine in the county clerk’s office beginning May 1 and ending May 21 during the following hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. - noon.

In preparing for Election Day, extra election training was slated to start April 14 and continue on April 21 and 28. Precinct workers have been contacted and scheduled their times for training. Fitzgerald advised she will contact the schools to see if they have roping that can be borrowed to use in the school gyms to help with keeping lines better formed.

The next regular meeting is set for May 18 at 9 a.m. A special called meeting will be held May 1 at 9 a.m. to inspect and set up the absentee voting machine.
