Fiscal Court budget easily sails through first reading, state review next By LARRY SEE JR. A proposed 2007-2008 budget which included line items for expected grants and paid off the county road grader and E-911 equipment easily coasted through a first reading May 30. The grand total of all budget funds is $11,956,558. Last year’s budget was pegged at $10,048,152. One of the increases this year was the recent million dollar grant awarded by the state legislature. This grant was for water and sewer improvements throughout the county, with the largest chunk designated for the industrial park. “We saved about $20,000 by paying off the equipment,” county Judge Executive Harry Craycroft said. “It is all paid off now and we also saved a pretty good chunk of interest.” Other improvements are planned around the courthouse, bringing the Fairway Drive facility into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Craycroft said improvements include fixing two sidewalks and restriping the parking lot. Craycroft said the budget can be amended anytime between the first and second reading. The general fund budget was set at $6,810,084, with the largest portion, 24.73 percent reserved for the general government area or $1,684,270. In the road fund area, the budget was set at $1,919,722 with the largest portion, $1,660,152 or 86.4 percent given for roads. The jail fund was pegged at $1,616,752 with 76.56 percent given to protection to persons and property. The local government assistance fund was pegged at $1,164,844 with 86.87 percent given for protection to persons and property. The other two budget areas were bond proceeds funds, totalling $441,056 and federal grants, set at $5,000.
