Special Olympics track and field compete in Area 4 Regional Spring Games

The Meade County Special Olympics track and field team competed May 12 in the Area 4 Regional Spring Games. The event took place at Ballard High School, Louisville, with “The Year of the Athlete” as its theme.

During the opening ceremony the team represented Meade County in the parade of teams. Meade County athlete Deanna Mooney was chosen to be a speaker at the opening ceremony along with University of Louisville football coach Steve Kraqthorpe, who met with the athletes.

The team is coached by Jeff Shaw and Shania Harper, who led their team to victory with their hard work, great coaching skills and dedication.

Appreciation to volunteers, Danielle Billion and Elizabeth Swartz and family and friends who were there to cheer the athletes to victory! The team will compete in the Special Olympics State Tournament June 1-3.

Those who placed in the regional spring games were:

Softball throw: Isiah Brown and Deanna Mooney, both placed 1st; Samantha Billion, Ricky Bryant, Troy Hadorn and Joshua Janes, all placed 2nd; Stanley Edge, 3rd; and Rose Thompson, 4th.

Shotput: Jeremy Vibbert, 1st place; and Daniel Bird, 3rd place.

Running long jump: Trey Bishop, 1st place.
50-meter dash: Samantha Billion, 1st place; and Troy Hadorn and Rose Thompson, both placed 2nd.
200-meter dash: Trey Bishop, 2nd place.
400-meter dash: Daniel Bird, 2nd place; and Jeremy Vibbert, 3rd place.
100-meter walk: Isiah Brown and Ricky Bryant, both placed 1st; and Joshua Janes, 3rd place.
100-meter wheelchair: Deanna Mooney, 1st place.
