Tyler Crow takes 1st at North Hardin Tournament
By Bill Rosacker Three years ago, Meade County High School did not field a wrestling team. On Jan. 19 they won one of the major tournaments held in this area. Approximately 224 wrestlers representing 16 schools descended on the North Hardin gymnasium to wrestle in one of the largest individual tourneys held in the state. Throughout the day and into the evening, these young men wrestled for individual honors as well as for their team. “There are many out there that think because we are a two-year team, we don’t belong,” said Coach Bob Davis, “but we showed them!” And what a showing it was. The latest team wrestling rankings from kentuckywrestling.com on Jan. 16 had Meade County ranked 46th in the state. Most of the squads that wrestled at North Hardin were ranked higher than Meade County. Rankings are only personal opinions put on paper, or in this case digits. The Greenwave wrestlers went into the contest confident they would do well. Through total team effort they brought home the first-place trophy, out-pointing the 17th ranked second-place team Christian County by a score of 205 to 189. Louisville Seneca (ranked 10th) came in third, Central Hardin (ranked 31st) was fourth and Louisville’s Pleasure Ridge Park (ranked 44th) came in fifth. “I didn’t think we would win it,” said Davis after it was over, “but I thought we would have a very good showing.” The high point of the evening came when sophomore Tyler Crow, wrestling at 215 lbs., pinned PRP’s senior Kyle Smith in 3:15 for the outright 215-lb. championship. Smith was ranked 22nd while Crow was listed at 25th. Smith was ahead on points through two periods until Crow took him down to the mat hard, and pinned him. “Whooo I feel great” was Crow’s after match reaction. “I’m real proud of our 215 (Crow),” said Davis, “He’s worked real hard, but I’m real proud of all our kids. You cannot believe how hard they’ve worked to get here.” You don’t win the team award by having one wrestler take a 1st place trophy; it is a total team effort. Of the 12 wrestlers competing on the team, 10 placed fifth or better in the individual standings. James Childress 103 lbs. (3-1) and Cody Bruce 189 lbs. (3-1) also made it to the finals along with Crow, only to fall in defeat, but secure second place. Ethan Medley 140 lbs. (4-1), C.J. Crow (145), and Justin Geary 171 lbs. (4-1) all came in third in their weight division, while Junior Mason 152 lbs. (3-2), and Bobby Fuqua 285 lbs. came in fourth. Brandon Wyatt 130 lbs. (3-2) and Joey Carter 135 lbs. (3-2) placed fifth. While not placing in the medal rounds, Arthur Ohmes 125 lbs. (1-2) and Tanner Cole 160 lbs. (2-2) contributed to the total effort by winning some of their individual matches. Each win is important because team points are based on individual results. “These kids have worked hard all year. You can’t beat what they’ve done,” said Davis. “We’ve won the last three tournaments we entered.” Meade has won the regional state duals for the number one seed for Region 3 in the state dual competition. “For a two-year program, this was totally unexpected.” On Jan. 16, the Greenwaves participated in a dual match against DeSales and Southern high schools. They won both of those team events, 54-21 against DeSales, and 53-24 against Southern, in what proved to be a tune up for this tournament. All this is in preparation for the state tournament to be held Feb. 14-16. The Greenwave wrestling squad has three more matches scheduled before the regional tournament that will be held on Feb. 9.
