Fighting Tigers too much for Greenwaves

Meade County ventured to Breckinridge County Feb. 8 to make up the district game postponed by the weather. You would think fan support at 5:30 on a Sunday afternoon would be sparse at best. Add to that the fact that this was the third day in a row the Greenwaves would lace up their sneakers and do battle on the hardwood, but that was not the case on this Sunday. The stands were filled by fans rooting for both sides. Meade, as always, had a large contingent on hand to cheer on the Greenwaves while the Fighting Tigers filled the rest of the gym. Both sides were treated to an entertaining and hard-fought contest, from which only one team would emerge victorious.

Meade had revenge in mind because Breck had won in their first district game at Meade County. Breckinridge County knew the number one seed for the upcoming district tournament was on the line, and they wanted to end Meade County’s series of being the number one seed.

Meade jumped out to an early deficit with two point-blank misses of layups, while Breck successfully converted three times to take an early 7-0 lead. With 6:07 to go in the first quarter, Meade had to call their first time out of the game to receive guidance from Coach Jerry Garris. Whatever he said seemed to work. Ethan Brangers made two foul shots to put Meade on the scoreboard, and the Greenwaves began a comeback. Doug Wells tied the score with 3:23 to go in the quarter, and Brangers put the Greenwaves ahead for the first time 9-7. Meade had outscored Breck 9-0. The remainder of the quarter was a dogfight, and when the buzzer signaled the end of the quarter the score stood tied 12-12.

The second quarter saw the emergence of Isaiah Satram as an offensive force. He went on a tear, scoring all 10 of his points in the second quarter, and when the half ended, Meade held a slim 26-23 lead over the home team. “I think tonight was the situation that if we didn’t have a halftime, we might have been better off,” said Garris after the game, and he was right.

After the half, the game went Breck’s way. They quickly erased the Greenwaves’ three-point halftime lead and took the lead again on three straight three-point goals by Breck’s Brett Mingus. After another time out and regrouping, Meade battled back, and the third quarter became a nip-and-tuck ball game. Both teams made good plays, and some not so good plays. It couldn’t have been closer: at the end of three, it was all tied up at 36, with one quarter to play.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Fighting Tigers. They opened up a 43-36 point lead on Meade’s inability to score. Meade fought to within three, 45-42, but that was as close as they came. In the end, Meade tried to get back into the game by fouling at the end, but Breck made the free throws when they had to and the final score was Breckinridge County 53, Meade County 42.
