August Is National Catfish Month
his year marks 30 years since the U.S. Congress designated August as National Catfish Month following President Regan’s declaration that June 25 would be National Catfish Day in 1987. This was a designation made to honor the versatile, and sustainable, food and industry. Catfish aquaculture is a thriving industry here in the U.S., with the most recent aquaculture census (2005) listing catfish as, by far and away, the highest performing farm-raised fish. In 2005 alone U.S. catfish farmers produced 396.6 million pounds of catfish for a total of $429.2 million in sales.
