Greenwaves Suffer Another Heartbreaker
The Meade County High School Greenwave Basketball team’s losing streak finally came to an end in an away game against Trinity (Whitesville) so on Jan 31, they hoped to carry that momentum into their home game against District Rival the Breckenridge County High School Tigers. Meade came straight out of the gate running with a fast paced, in your face, offense that worked well against the Breck’s defense, and netted them a quick six-point lead quickly before Breck could even score their first basket. It would take Breck the entire period to close the gap on Meade but was able to tie the game with just over one-minute remaining in the period. Both teams would drop in a pair of baskets ending the first tied at 15-15.
“When we played these guys earlier in the season, we looked like a JV team against them. So tonight, they knew they had to come out and play hard,” said Coach Jason Tripure. “I told them that we’re going to have to attack, and they did that. It’s a process and they are working through it.”
Meade came out in the second to go on a 10-0 run over Breck, giving them the lead, forcing the Tigers coach to call a timeout. After the timeout Breck looked to close the gap once again by using their outside shooting, and that shooting came from senior Kaeveon Mitchell. Mitchell knocked down three 3-pointers in a row to put a quick nine points up on the board and close to within four of Meade. As the teams swapped baskets back and forth, Meade was able to keep a five-point lead as they headed to the locker rooms for halftime.
