In an exciting new venture that marries outdoor experiences with cinematic storytelling, Sundance Collab and the outdoor footwear giant Merrell have teamed up for a groundbreaking initiative titled “It Starts Outside.” This collaboration, announced as the Sundance Film Festival prepares for its inaugural event in Boulder, Colorado, in January, is sparking interest with its unique approach to filmmaking.

### A Fresh Approach to Filmmaking
Merrell has committed to a three-year partnership with Sundance, launching a program that supports filmmakers who are passionate about the great outdoors. Each selected filmmaker will receive $20,000 to create a short film lasting between 60-90 seconds. These films, produced under a three-month mentorship program guided by Sundance, aim to explore the personal meanings of “outside.”
The initiative will culminate in a special event at the festival, featuring a live screening and a panel discussion with the filmmakers. This provides a platform not only for showcasing their work but also for discussing the intersection of nature and narrative cinema.
### Supporting Global Storytellers
Sundance Collab’s director, Patty West, emphasized the commitment to nurturing independent storytellers from diverse backgrounds. She highlighted the significance of this partnership with Merrell in providing emerging filmmakers with both the funding and mentorship necessary to bring their visions to life.
The program is part of Merrell’s broader “It Starts Outside” marketing initiative. Richard McLeod, Merrell’s Chief Marketing Officer, elaborated on the philosophy behind the campaign. He noted that the initiative reflects the brand’s belief in the transformative power of the outdoors, suggesting that even simple moments in nature can unlock profound experiences and connections.
### The First Cohort of Filmmakers
The initial phase of the program has already selected six filmmakers: Sharon Liese, Ciril Jazbec, Jean Luke Miraflore, Laura Basil Duncan, Gabriella Canal, and Quinne Larsen. These artists bring a variety of perspectives and styles to the project, promising a rich and diverse exploration of what the outdoors means to different people.

### Looking Ahead
As anticipation builds for the 2027 Sundance Film Festival, which will run from January 21-31, both Sundance and Merrell are excited about the potential of “It Starts Outside” to inspire both filmmakers and audiences alike. This initiative not only offers a fresh narrative lens focused on the natural world but also opens up new career pathways for directors interested in brand-supported storytelling.
This partnership represents a significant step forward in how film festivals and brands can collaborate to support and promote independent film while also highlighting important themes like environmental awareness and personal connection to the outdoors.
