CATHERINE CLARA CARTER MARTIN Catherine Clara Carter Martin died Sept. 3, 2007, at North Hardin Health and Rehabilitation Center, Radcliff. She was born August 1911 in Breckinridge County. She was a 1929 graduate of Breckinridge County High School, attended college at Bowling Green, taught school at Lodiburg, where her only transportation was riding side saddle, before deciding to become a nurse. She was a graduate of Sts. Mary and Elizabeth School of Nursing, Louisville. In the late 1950’s, she learned of a nursing shortage at Hardin Memorial Hospital and volunteered her services. Later she worked as a private duty RN there for many years. She was a 25-year volunteer for the American Red Cross. She will be remembered by many associated with the Vine Grove schools, which all her children attended, as a dedicated volunteer wherever she was needed. For many years, she was greatly involved with 4-H and immensely enjoyed helping children learn about homemaking. She was a member of St. Brigid Catholic Church, Vine Grove. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Fines Earl Martin; a son, Larry Joseph Martin; her parents, Edwin Franklin (Frank) and Emma Pauline Schmitt Carter of Cloverport; two brothers, Robert Carter and Stafford Carter. Mrs. Martin is survived by three sons, Paul Thomas (Betty) Martin, Brandenburg, Donnie (Gloria) Martin, Kokomo Ind., and Alan Martin, Nashville Tenn.; three daughters, Ruth Ann Martin, Radcliff, Martha (Lee) Witherow, Boerne Texas, and Julia “Judy” Bush, Nashville Tenn.; a daughter-in-law, Ann Martin, McCormick, S.C.; a sister, Ruth Carter Bowling, Louisville; two brothers, Joseph Marion (Frances) Carter, Louisville, and Richard (Dorothy) Carter, Cloverport, 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; large extended family; and many friends. Funeral services will be held Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home, Vine Grove, with Deacon Michael Vessels officiating. Burial will be in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens, Elizabethtown. Friends may call at the funeral home Sept. 5, 3-9 p.m., and after 9 a.m. Sept. 6. There will be a prayer vigil at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5 from the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, P. O.
