BARBARA LOUISE SMITH
Barbara Louise Smith, 65, West Point, died April 3, 2010, at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville.
She was born March 16, 1945, in Louisville, to the late John C. and Hazel Marie Grimes Hedge.
She was a registered nurse at Jewish Hospital for several years where she received an Ambassador’s Award in 1995 for outstanding performance. As a nursing student in 1991, she won a national essay contest sponsored by Johnson & Johnson and the National Student Nurses’ Association. She graduated from Elizabethtown Community College with an associate degree in nursing in 1991 and was a 1963 alumnus of duPont Manual High School.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Sheila Campbell; and two brothers, Bobby Lee and John C. Hedge Jr.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Michael C. Smith Sr., West Point; two daughters, Melissa (Jack) Aikin, Brandenburg, and Jill Suzanne (Steve) Flaherty, Shepherdsville; a son, M. Clay (Mary) Smith Jr., Elizabethtown; a sister, Priscilla (Mike) McCollum, West Point; a brother, Marvin Earl (Gloria) Hedge, Louisville; nine grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
The family chose cremation.
A memorial service will be held April 6, 2010, at 7 p.m. EDT, at West Point United Methodist Church, 109 South 6th Street in West Point.
Friends and family may call at the church from 6-7 p.m.
Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
