SHERMON L. MITCHELL

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Shermon L. Mitchell, 67, Vine Grove, died May 3, 2010, at the VA Hospital in Louisville.

He was a Kentucky Colonel and a lifetime member of the VFW Post #10281 in Vine Grove. He served honorably in the U.S. Army for 21 years; serving in Korea and two tours in Vietnam where he received numerous awards and decorations. Mitch, the “Po Mitch,” also served in the capacity of a civil servant at Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, and Fort Knox for many years. He enjoyed his service as a Master Mason.

His last formal lodge association was with the HUB City Lodge in Elizabethtown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vanzeleen Kight and Buster Mitchell; adoptive parents, Duncan and Ora Baker Mitchell; and a brother, Ervin D. Kight.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Ret. (LTC) Evelenia James Mitchell, Vine Grove; five daughters, Shermona and Sherlenia Mitchell, Evangelia Jordon, Michelle Burns and Cynthia Mitchell; three sons, Doug, Chuck, and Alphonso Mitchell; and a host of grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 7, at the Sign of the Dove Church in Radcliff, with Brother Michael Riley officiating.Burial was in the Kentucky Veteran’s Cemetery Central in Radcliff, with military honors.
