Veterans Day observances in Meade County

Photos by Vickey Carwile (above) Students and staff of Meade County High School held a Veterans Day assembly Nov. 10. The family of Sgt. James Sherrill, who died last spring in Iraq, was honored during the ceremony, as were faculty members and students with loved ones in the military. Sgt. Maj. Tony Rose, who served in the military for 31 years, addressed the assembly.

Photos by Sandra Stone (above) The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) joined together at the 11th hour, 11th minute of the 11th day of the 11th month to observe Veterans Day, a day of remembering those who served our country during times of war and peace and of honoring the memory of those who died in defense of our nation and what it stands for. “Today we honor and salute all American veterans,” said Wilbur Beasley, commander of VFW Post 11404, in his comments to those assembled. “We are a grateful country and we appreciate their sacrifice.” Gloria Brady, president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, place the wreath at the monument in front of the Meade County Courthouse and spoke briefly about the nation’s support of its military, particularly in a trying time. “We do not have to agree with the purpose of the conflict,” she said, “but we should always support the military members and their families.”
