Attendance at the Meade County Community Partners meeting Nov. 10 was down, but those in attendance shared information about their organizations and services provided to the community.
Kris Paul, clinical director of the Meade County Health Department, advised the center would be holding a walk-in flu shot clinic Nov. 18. Vaccines are $19; FluMist is $28. The advantage to the FluMist, advised Paul, is that it lasts for a year, as opposed to three or four months. FluMist is available for healthy people ages 5-49.
Community health educator Melissa Kinnard advised the next Community CPR class at the Meade County Public Library would be held Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. For more information, call the health department at 422-3988 or the library at 422-2094.
Suzanne Walters with Springhaven Domestic Violence advised their major fundraising event would be held Nov. 25, the Friday after Thanksgiving. The event will be held at the Performing Arts Center at John Hardin High School. For tickets or more information, call (800) 767-5838. In February, Springhaven and the Advocacy and Support Group will partner to produce “The Vagina Monologues” as a joint fundraiser for these two agencies. Walters, who is the domestic violence victim’s advocate in Meade and Breckinridge counties, advised the domestic violence rate is staying fairly high. It will drop off during the holidays, she said, and then there will be a big explosion in January. Anyone needing information or assistance regarding a domestic violence situation is encouraged to call (270) 422-7771.
Don Mascaro with Vocational Rehab expressed his frustration about training dollars being cut yet again.
The Family Resource Centers at the elementary schools are working on a variety of projects including family literacy nights and adoption of angel tree children for the holiday season. The grandparents support group meeting date has changed to the second and fourth Monday at 9 a.m. at James R. Allen Primary School. The first McTeacher night will be held Nov. 16. A portion of the proceeds from inside sales that evening will be donated to David T. Wilson Elementary School.
Jennifer Porter-Benham, Extension agent for family and consumer sciences, advised the Backpack for Hunger program is ongoing with about 50 students being served. Weight: The Reality Series is ongoing each Monday evening. And on Dec. 12, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., the Meade County Extension Homemakers will host a holiday tasting party featuring a variety of recipes from their new cookbook, “Favorite Recipes.”
The local FOP lodge will hold a roadblock Nov. 26 to raise money for the Shop With Cops program, an outreach which continues to grow each year.
