E-911 addressing changes continue throughout county

Addressing changes due to the emergence of Enhanced 911 services in Meade County continue, with the most recent re-addressing accomplished in the cities of Brandenburg, Muldraugh, and Ekron.

Address changes made in Brandenburg, Muldraugh, and Ekron have been turned over to the post offices in those cities for their review. After the post offices have completed their review, the address changes will then be sent to the city governments of each city for verification. Once everything has been signed off at the local level, changes will be submitted to USPS’s main branch in Louisville for entry into their data base. Once this has been completed, residents and businesses will receive a letter informing them of their new address – house or business number and new street name, if applicable.

Ten street names have been changed in the city of Brandenburg. E-911 is recommending a couple of street name changes in Muldraugh and Ekron, although no street names have yet been changed.

Following address changes, the post office will provide mail forwarding for a period of one year. House and mailbox numbers should be changed as soon as changes are official. Per an Addressing Ordinance, recently set in place by Meade County Fiscal Court, homeowners and businesses have 30 days (from the date of official notification) to change the numbers displayed on their home or business. Anyone not accurately displaying their address number after 30 days may be issued a citation for violation of the ordinance.

Those experiencing re-addressing changes will also need to update their driver’s license. Circuit Court Clerk Debbi Medley contacted Frankfort to inquire if the fee for new driver’s licenses could be waived given the E-911 re-addressing. However, given the scope of the re-addressing project and the number of people affected by these changes, Medley said the Division of Driver’s Licensing at Frankfort stated it is unable to waive new driver’s license fees and the fee will be the responsibility of the driver. Per the Division of Driver’s Licensing, those needing a new driver’s license due to an address change should obtain a new license within 10 days of receiving notification of their new address. License renewals are $20 for a basic operator renewal, and duplicate operator licenses are $12.

Next on E-911’s plate will be the re-addressing of the rest of the county, as needed. “We’re getting ready to start looking at the roads leading out of Brandenburg,” stated 911 director Mark Bennett. Bennett said 911 should obtain access to both Brandenburg Telephone Company and Bell South databases within the next few weeks and will be completing the necessary work associated with connecting these databases to the newly purchased E-911 hardware. He also stated a county road directory with street names and directionals is planned. “It’s primarily being completed for emergency responders,” said Bennett, “But it will also be useful for those living in the county or visiting the county for business purposes.” More information about the directory and how it can be purchased will be available at a later date. The directory will be updated on a periodic basis as the county grows and new streets are added.
