On May 3, Meade County High School senior Justin Shelman signed a letter of intent to play golf for Kentucky Wesleyan College.

“Kentucky Wesleyan is a really nice school and I’m very glad to be going there,” said Shelman. “It is a great opportunity to travel and to see lots of different places, too.”

Shelman, who was named a member of the All-Area second team as a senior, shot a 78 in this year’s regional tournament, coming just shy of qualifying for the state tournament.

“Justin is the first kid to sign while I have been coach, so it is exciting,” said Greenwave golf coach Josh Thompson. “I can only imagine how great it is to be able to play golf in college.”

Kentucky Wesleyan’s golf program completed their fall schedule ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region. The Panthers finished with a record of 21-1 in the fall, and their spring season is currently underway.

Meade County has already had seven student-athletes commit to several different colleges this year with the intent of playing sports at the next level. Two basketball players and four football players have signed, along with Shelman from the golf program.

“We are going to have a young team next year, and I hope this shows the guys what is possible for them to achieve,” said Thompson. “They should all be able to see that golf can be an opportunity for them.”

“I am really excited,” said Shelman. “To have the chance to keep playing golf in college is just great.”
