The Meade County tennis teams prepared for regionals on April 27, competing in the conference tournament at Elizabethtown Community College.
Greenwave senior Nick Templin (#1 singles) first competed against Central Hardin’s Zach Thomas, losing 1-8.
Jonah Cundiff (#2 singles) then took on Fort Knox’s James Johnson, and the freshman was able to come away with an 8-1 win.
“Jonah has shown a great deal of poise for a freshman in his first major tournament,” said Greenwave coach Mark Zweifel. “He played great matches.”
In the second round of play, Cundiff met Larue County’s Jimmy Hornback. Despite Cundiff’s best efforts, he could not overcome the play of the tournament’s third-seeded player and lost 4-6, 4-6.
“Jonah’s performance against Hornback showed his growth this season,” said Zweifel. “He played Hornback three days earlier and lost 1-6, 2-6. In the second round he took Jimmy the distance, 4 and 4. This shows Jonah’s growth and understanding of the game.”
The #1 doubles team of senior Adam Arwood and freshman Mike West were defeated 1-8 by E-town’s Ball and Rahman, and juniors Allan Basham and Esteban Gonzalez (#2 doubles) fell to Fort Knox’s Needham and Williams, 5-8.
The Lady Waves started their conference play with Danae Powers (#1 singles) as the senior lost to Larue County’s fourth-seeded Maggie Russell, 0-8.
Senior Sarah Fisher (#2 singles) also faced tough competition in E-town’s third-seeded Amanda Young, with Fisher falling 1-8.
“Sarah played a good game against a very strong and experienced player,” said Lady Wave coach Maike Bates. “Most games were played to deuce and then lost. She did a great job.”
The Lady Waves’ #2 doubles team of juniors Annmarie Givans and Megan Wright fell to Larue County’s Carmen Drake and Michelle Seymour 1-8, but seniors Kayla Roe and Natalie Hart advanced to the second round, defeating Larue’s Sarah Baker and Shelby Haun, 8-4.
“Just three days before the tournament, Kayla and Natalie had lost to Baker and Haun, and now beat them,” said Bates. “Both Natalie and Kayla made powerful shots and worked very well together.”
Despite the doubles team’s exceptional play in the first round, Roe and Hart could not take down the first-seeded pair of Central Hardin’s Flood and Hays, losing 3-6, 1-6 in the quarterfinals.
“The girls still did a wonderful job,” said Bates. “Winning points against girls that are that good is a victory for us.”
