The thunder of hoofbeats and the deafening sound of cannon fire resounded through Brandenburg as history was recreated at the reenactment of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan’s Great Raid during Civil War Days held at Riverfront Park July 8 and 9.

Gen. Morgan led many successful raids behind Union lines. The most famous raid was through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio during the summer of 1863, which led to his capture and the eventual destruction of his division. He escaped from prison in 1864 and was killed by Union forces shortly after in Tennessee.

Crowds of enthusiastic citizens of Meade and surrounding counties were transported back in time as they strolled past encampments of Union and Confederate armies, complete with primitive artifacts of the Civil War era.

The highlights of the event were the Great Raid which took place along Main Street and the mock battle between the north and south which occured on the soccer field.

Civil War Days is sponsored by the Meade County Public Library. The organizations that provide the reenacting are the First Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, the Ninth Michigan Volunteer Infantry; MDB Production Services, based in Indiana; the city of Brandenburg; and Meade County Tourism.
