Meade County Extension Homemakers invited the community to celebrate Homemakers’ Week (Oct. 8-14) on Oct. 12 with “A Taste of Fall” and “Gifts from the Heart.”
The tasting party consisted of 28 recipes from Favorite Recipes, the Meade County Extension Homemakers’ cookbook. Homemakers who submitted these recipes made them for everyone’s tasting enjoyment. Cookbooks were available for purchase. The tables were decorated with many different fall themes to give people new ideas for fall decorating. Decorating and centerpieces was the October lesson for Homemaker clubs.
After the tasting party, Gifts from the Heart featured craft and gift ideas for the holidays. The following Homemakers demonstrated crafts: Charlotte Lawson, spoon chimes; Ann Duncan, snowman or snowwoman; Theresa Mattingly, basket weave picture; and Jennifer Bridge, mums. Participants received a booklet with additional ideas. Beautiful mums from Janet Hobbs and the demonstrated crafts were given as door prizes.
The Homemakers have a new antique display case at the Extension office to display Homemaker cookbooks and other memorabilia. Several of the older cookbooks were donated by Thelma Singleton. The display case was donated by the Meade County Fair and refinished by Shirley Beavin. The Bluegrass Club donated a plaque in memory of Vickie Heman for her support of the domestic violence center. Heman was a member of Homemakers who died in a motorcycle accident last year.
Homemakers actively volunteer in the community, working with 4-H, Habitat for Humanity, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Backpack program, Relay for Life, Meade County Fair, and numerous other groups.
At present, Meade County Homemakers are involved in several projects: Raising funds for ovarian cancer research, collecting items for the spouse abuse center, collecting Beanie Babies to send to Iraqi children, and making knitted or crocheted bonnets for newborn babies in Africa through Dare to Care. If you would like to help with any of these charitable projects, please contact the Extension office. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
The Homemakers’ Holiday Bazaar will be Nov. 11 at the Meade County High School cafeteria from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be over 20 booths selling pecans, cookbooks, cutlery, baked goods and handmade crafts of all kinds. Come join the fun.
