Pets in Need Society (PINS) a vital, nonprofit organization that has since 2000 promoted the public awareness and improvement of animal welfare in Meade County, was recently selected as the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the Ephraim and Wilma Shaw Roseman Foundation.
Ephraim Roseman, now deceased, was a respected Louisville neurologist and also a professor at the University of Louisville. His wife, Wilma Shaw Roseman, was raised in Meade County. The Rosemans lived in Prospect for many years, but Mrs. Roseman returned to live in Meade County a couple years ago.
Typically, the Ephraim and Wilma Shaw Roseman Foundation donates its funds in the area of education. However, Wilma Shaw Roseman is an animal lover, said her niece, who also serves on the board of the foundation. When family members who serve on the foundation’s board told Mrs. Roseman about the efforts of Pets in Need Society, she decided to make a contribution to the organization.
PINS’ president Liz Bell said the grant money will allow PINS to once again offer a free spay or neuter to any dog or cat adopted from the Meade County Animal Shelter, a program once offered by PINS but which had been discontinued due to lack of funding. PINS has, however, since 2001 offered financial assistance to Meade County citizens who need help paying for the sterilization of their animals. To date, PINS has helped spay and neuter just shy of 3,000 Meade County dogs and cats, greatly reducing the number of animals born who would only become homeless or euthanized at a shelter.
PINS’ members were thrilled to receive the grant money from the foundation. Said Bell, “Not only does it help us continue with our programs, but it also lets us know we’re on the right track – that the work our organization is doing is recognized as making a real difference here in Meade County.”
