Meade County Conservation District holds annual award banquet

The Meade County Conservation District held its annual banquet at Stuart Pepper Middle School on March 7. Master of ceremonies for the banquet was Meade County Conservation District board chairman John Bruington. Award presenters were board members Jim Scott, Jack King, and Fred L. Sipes. Resource conservationist B.J. Stith explained to the crowd what characteristics describe a master conservationist.

Following the dinner and the recognition of board members, employees and guests, the Meade County High School Barbershop Quartet provided the evening’s entertainment.

Awards were presented to two Meade County individuals who best met the criteria of Master Conservationist. Receiving this year’s awards were Robert L. Brown and Marshall Morgan. Brown and Morgan received certificates signed by the governor, a “Master Conservationist” sign to display on their property, and an embroidered Master Conservationist jacket.

Every year, the Courier-Journal sponsors a writing and art contest. This year’s topic was “Kentucky soil – it’s worth protecting.” Awards for the contest were presented at the banquet, with all first place winners, their parents, and teachers invited to attend the banquet.

The grand prize art contest winner for the entire county was Toni Peterson from Flaherty Elementary School. Toni is the daughter of Cindy and Mike Peterson, and her teacher is Christine Shaw.

The grand prize writing contest winner for the entire county was Billy Hart, who is the son of Bill and Angela Hart. His teacher is Mrs. Crawford.

Art contest winners for the entire county are as follows: Flaherty Elementary – Toni Peterson (1st), Olivia Kasey (2nd), and Nicole Humphrey; Battletown Elementary – Cailee Thomas (1st), Dustin Hoskins (2nd), and Roby

White (3rd); Muldraugh Elementary – Sean Goins (1st), Trese McCormick (2nd), and Sierra Kronka (3rd); David T. Wilson – Courtney Lasley (1st), Sarah Sutterly (2nd), and Ethan Wright (3rd); and Payneville Elementary – Cierra Hopkins (1st).

Overall art contest winners for the entire county are: Toni Peterson (1st), Courtney Lasley (2nd), Sean Goins (3rd), Cailee Thomas (4th), and Cierra Hopkins (5th).

Writing contest winners for the entire county are as follows: Muldraugh Elementary – Billy Hart (1st), Viola Zimmerman (2nd), and Bryce Wood (3rd); Meade County High School – Alex Richardson (1st), Grant Wiles (2nd), and Dustin Pike (3rd); Battletown Elementary – Hannah Skaggs (1st), Taylor Daley (2nd), and Kyle Arnold (3rd); David T. Wilson Elementary – Hanna Moore (1st), Tate Wilson (2nd), and Allison Denton (3rd).

Overall writing contest winners for the entire county are: Billy Hart (1st), Hanna Moore (2nd), Alex Richardson (3rd), and Hannah Skaggs (4th).

Fifty-seven Meade County students participated in the writing contest, and 329 students participated in the art contest.

All first-place winners received a $25 check and a T-shirt from the Conservation District. Toni Peterson and Billy Hart also received $50 savings bonds from the Courier-Journal. Second- place school winners as well as overall county winners received $15, third-place winners received $10, and fourth-place winners received $5.
