Christmas plans in process; community pride committee growing in size

Although the calendar says July, plans are already in process for the annual Christmas by the River events, Brandenburg City Council members learned July 9.
Council member Maggie Love said a lot of the displays used previously needed some attention.
“After 10 or 15 years you need to think about some new things,” she said, “and I think people might do it after reading something in the paper about it.”
Mayor David Pace also said the committee will have a booth at this year’s fair, promoting the event.
The opening day festival, held during the weekend after Thanksgiving, typically includes a parade of lights, entertainment on the gazebo at Riverfront Park, fireworks and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The event this year is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 25 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) and will include a community worship service as a way of putting Christ back into Christmas.
The drive-through display continues from dusk to midnight opening day through New Year’s Day.
In a related matter, members learned several new people have expressed interest in belonging to the community pride committee, following recent publicity.
Following the installation of a new water line in town, Pace said committee members will start ideas on beautifying the area. Their next meeting is not planned until August.
To participate or for questions on either activity, call the Brandenburg City Hall at (270) 422-4981.
