The Meade County Board of Elections held their monthly meeting July 13 with County Clerk Katrina Fitzgerald and members Faye Miller and Sheriff Bruce Kerrick in attendance.
Fitzgerald distributed a letter from the State Board of Elections regarding processes during the May primary. The letter, said Fitzgerald, was intended as an aid for future training sessions, and she indicated her intent to use this letter during the next training session for Meade County’s precinct workers.
Some of the issues will be addressed in the clerk’s office with regard to how absentee votes are marked on voter registration books. Other lapses included extra notes written in the signature line and the incorrect ink color or pencil used on the rosters.
The letter also addressed the use of “Vote Wood” post-it notes at the end of one precinct’s roster. Fitzgerald advised she had already responded to this concern and had noted the post-it notes had been used to make notations after the election was over.
The secretary of state sponsored buttons which read “I’m voting in honor of a veteran” and provide a space in which to write the name of a veteran the voter knows. One voter was required to remove his button, which he was wearing in honor of his son who is serving in Iraq because the precinct worker thought it was a campaign button. These buttons, said Fitzgerald, are allowable in precincts, and more may be seen in the November general election. The buttons are available at the Meade County clerk’s office. There is no charge for them.
The next Meade County Board of Elections meeting is Aug. 13 at 9 a.m.
