The raid on the Coomes cabin
On July 11, I met with Hobart Coomes, 97, likely the last living person to have first-hand knowledge of the Coomes cabin raid. Mr. Coomes and three of his children, Edna Brown, Lamar and Leroy Coomes, met with Hobart at a local nursing home to discuss this little-known Civil War raid. I was honored to attend. Hobart has another daughter, Bonnie Dodson, who resides in Elizabethtown but was unable to attend. Five direct descendants of Hobart Coomes live today within two miles of the old Coomes cabin. Mr. Coomes has a remarkable ability to recall dates and events. His knowledge of the Coomes cabin raid differs significantly from earlier written accounts.
The Coomes cabin revisited
On July 19, I had the pleasure of escorting Edna Coomes Brown to the Raymond Cemetery to research the Coomes family history. While we were there, we decided to visit the old cabin site as well as the location where part of the Coomes cabin was rebuilt. We met Michael (Mike) Pollock at his farm where we visited the old Coomes home. Mike explained to us that when the cabin was relcoated, the upper structure had decayed and fallen in on itself. He managed to salvage the lower walls of the cabin and added a few logs of similar size to reconstruct the cabin into a single story plan. By the time Mike got to the original site, someone had already removed the chimney made of hand hewn limestone rock.
