Buster’s bus safety lesson
Photos by Sandra Stone
The last week of September, Meade County school bus drivers traveled the roads after they’d dropped off their passengers, visiting every elementary school in the county to share information about bus safety. They do this every year in addition to quarterly emergency evacuation drills. This year, drivers Darlene Lusk, Debbie Fackler, Dale Barger and Lisa Miller brought a friend with them as well. During a visit to Payneville Elementary School Sept. 25, Buster the Bus popped a few wheelies (something no self-respecting Meade County bus driver would ever do, of course), flashed his lights and demonstrated some of the features of a school bus. The drivers also reminded the students of a few basic rules for riding the bus: Be at the bus stop five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Always cross in front of the bus and at a safe distance (10-12 feet) in order to be seen by the bus driver. Wait for the driver to signal before crossing in front of the bus. Make sure shoes are tied and backpacks secured. And never stand in the road while waiting for the school bus.
