City to explore Ramsey Field prospects

Facing a tight budget, the lack of grants and needed park space, city officials informally authorized Mayor David Pace to pursue discussions with Meade County officials regarding the fate of Ramsey Field.
The popular park, located along Broadway Street, has Little League games several nights a week during the summer.
The field is named in honor of Egbert Ramsey, due to his dedication to coaching and mentoring young community residents.
The present owners have offered to lease the park to the city for a year, allowing city officials time to acquire the $70,000 to purchase the acreage.
“There is room there for one or two ballfields, plus a playground,” Pace said. “This has been discussed about 10 months ago before the council, but we have not had much success (with the grants).”
Pace admitted there wasn’t money in the budget for purchasing the property, but suggested it might be advantageous for the city to approach county officials.
Officials also have to find a way to create additional parking at the site, especially during the time ball games are played when funerals are in progress.
Council member Ronnie Joyner said a lot of residents use the park. An exact number of children who use the park could not be determined.
The park is currently owned by the Cottrell family, Pace said.
“There is a lot of tradition and a lot of history associated with the park,” Pace said.
In the interim, Pace will check on the availability of state grants.
In other husiness, members granted business licenses to Cash Express, LLC and the Main Street Cafe’.
