By LARRY SEE JR.
Messenger Staff
Long-time Riverport Authority board member and chairman Don Bewley resigned from the authority Dec. 4, citing the fact his work will be taking him out of the county extensively.
Bewley has not attended meetings for several months. Acting chairman Joe Wright has served in his absence.
Bewley was one of the first appointees to the authority, having started his service in August 2001. County Fiscal Court Clerk Shirley Fackler said Bewley was appointed to a three-year term and has been reappointed since.
Board members unanimously accepted his resignation and sent him a letter of appreciation.
In his resignation letter, Bewley recommended the Riverport, when completed, should be named in honor of George Hager, since he had done a lot for the project.
He also recommended Ken Sipes fill his position, but members took no action on his candidate.
Secretary/treasurer Edd Pike said members needed to determine who the appointment was made by and what line of service he represented.
Due to the departure of Bewley, members conducted an election.
Unopposed for the chairman’s position was Wright, who was unanimously selected. During the discusssion, Wright said if anyone else wanted the position, they were welcome to take it.
Nominated for the vice chairman’s slot was Hardin County farmer Jay Larry Thomas.
Pike will get the bank signature cards updated.
