Winter storm preparedness

Climatologists still project a warmer than normal overall winter with above normal precipitation for the region in and around Kentucky. This is not to say that we too could not fall victim to a winter storm similar to the one that still lingers in the Midwest. The Dec. 9 storm left more than an inch of ice on parts of eastern Kansas and northern Missouri, and almost 600,000 customers in Oklahoma lost power. It may be a week to 10 days before utilities are restored. At least 25 deaths have been blamed on the ice storm since it developed, mostly because of traffic accidents. Associate Press reports show as many as 300,000 customers in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska remain without electricity.
