County leaders adopt amended solid waste law in seven-minute session

By LARRY SEE JR.

The first reading of the county’s amended solid waste franchise legislation was formally adopted during a short session Jan. 2.

The item was the only thing on the special called meeting agenda.

The reading, conducted by County Attorney Margaret Matney, was necessary since members of the solid waste advisory committee had made some minor wording changes in the document late last year.

The ordinance grants Elizabethtown-based Waste Transport Services a five-year contract for the collection of solid waste within the county, with the exception of incorporated areas. The agreement, to commence April 1, is renewable for three additional five-year periods.

The monthly residential rate for residential solid waste collection and disposal will increase from the current $10 to $17.25 per month.

The ordinance will become effective following publication after the second reading. A date for that has not yet been set.
