Greenwaves defeat Breckinridge
A festive atmosphere permeated the Meade County basketball court last Friday night. The hometown fans filled half the gym while the Breckinridge County fans filled three-quarters of the opposite side. The remaining quarter was filled with Greenwave faithful. To add to the craziness, the “Camouflage Crazies” – all decked our in camouflage clothing and paint – lined the Meade County sideline in front of the band, where they remained the rest of the game. The pep bands and cheerleaders from both schools tried to outdo the other, cheering their squads on as well as elicit emotion from their fans. The Greenwave pep band, led by students Brooke Bennett, Lindsay Hardin, Katyh Lasley and Cameron Yundt started off the evening and after they finished their song, the Breck Fighting Tigers band answered and the battle of the bands was on. Breck then increased the warfare when their team took the floor, with the entire rooting section cheering the entrance of their team. Then the Greenwaves poured through the locker room and the entire gym shook to the rafters with the MCHS fight song. A great job by both pep bands setting the tone for the competition. Accompanying the bands, both squads of cheerleaders led cheers to get even more emotion from the faithful. The hard work and dedication these groups do, often without recognition, was quite evident from their performances and the results of their efforts. Before the contest ever began, the fans had reached a fever pitch. It was a great start to a very well played game. Then the mood turned somber as the Meade County Madrigals took center stage and presented a moving rendition of the national anthem. At the conclusion of the “The Star Spangled Banner”, the bedlam continued..

Lady Waves defeat Hancock
March Madness began last week in area prep girls’ basketball with the beginning of the 11th District tournament at Meade County High School. As the #1 seed, the Lady Waves’ first match-up was against winless Frederick Fraize. With two regular season wins already against Frederick Fraize by large margins, it gave the Lady Waves an opportunity to rest some key players and spread out some playing time. After an 82-11 win on Monday against Frederick Fraize, the Lady Waves clinched a berth in the 3rd Region Tournament and a date against Hancock County Thursday for the district championship.

One down, one to go
At the beginning of each basketball game, the Meade County Greenwaves normally explode through the locker room door to the band’s fight song and the cheers of the faithful fans. This explosion was missing from the pre-game ritual at the opening game of the district tournament Feb. 26. The band was playing, the fans were cheering, and the team walked through the door, walked to the court, and went through the pre-game drills with little enthusiasm. Energy was missing!
