The Meade County Board of Elections held a special called meeting May 2 in preparation for the primary election which will take place May 20.
The first order of business was to open the in-office absentee voting machine which will be available during office hours between now and May 19. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to noon. As the Meade County clerk’s office is now a polling place, no electioneering is to take place in the courthouse during office hours.
In addition to providing a voting place for those who will be out of the county on Election Day, Meade County Clerk Katrina Fitzgerald mailed 36 absentee ballots. Nine have been returned; one was undeliverable. The absentee paper ballot box is located in Fitzgerald’s office during business hours and locked up at night.
Election school for precinct workers was conducted May 1. Makeup schools will be conducted for those who did not attend. A quick reference guide was given to each precinct worker, and copies will also be included in the supply boxes for each precinct. Fitzgerald distributed the list of precinct workers to the board members.
The sample ballot will be published in the Messenger the week before Election Day. State statute requires the ballot be published in the newspaper with the largest local paid circulation.
Fitzgerald advised Andrew Horne has officially withdrawn from the Senate race. All other names will appear on the ballot, regardless of whether they are still in the race, and those votes will be counted.
Fitzgerald advised of a memorandum she had received regarding the Voter Participation Center, a project of Women’s Voices, Women Vote. They have sent out voter registration forms to Kentucky residents. The deadline to register has already passed, and she is concerned this may confuse people. Meade County residents with questions about their voter status should contact the clerk’s office at 422-2152.
The board of elections will meet May 16 at 9 a.m. to inspect the voting machines at the Old State garage. The machines will then be delivered May 19 with the cooperation of the road department and Meade County Board of Education. The polls will open at 6 a.m. on Election Day, May 20.
