Wave spirit overflows at cheerleading camp

Cheers, stunts and school spirit – all just part of the Meade County High School cheerleaders annual cheerleading camp.

With school spirit and excitement filling the air, over 60 campers filled the Brandenburg Primary School gym this past week as the Meade County High School cheerleaders held their annual cheerleading camp. Basics such as cheers, stunts and formations were taught as well as team camaraderie and school spirit.

“Our main goal of this camp is to increase the awareness of school spirit in the county by starting with our most enthusiastic age group,” said Kim Wood, head coach of the MCHS cheerleading squad. “These kids will eventually make up our cheerleading squad in the future. Even I can remember when I attended cheerleading camp, and so do all my girls.”

Since the MCHS varsity squad went to Eastern Kentucky in June for camp, they were able to learn and teach a lot of new cheers that the campers really enjoyed. The varsity cheerleaders were the main coaches this week for the campers, and Coach Wood perceived that as a great opportunity for her girls to reinforce positive leadership and allow the upperclassmen to be good role models.

“The little girls can pick out the varsity cheerleaders in public quicker than anything,” Wood said. “It is important that our girls be good role models which will help them build as leaders in the community.”

One thing Wood notices every year when football season comes around is that the girls she sees at camp are standing on the sidelines, doing the cheers with the varsity squad.

“It’s one of the most satisfying things to see. Now that they know the cheers we will be doing at the football and basketball games, it gives them the self-confidence needed to help our girls cheer the crowds up, and help our teams come out on top. We hope this will get their parents involved as well in cheering on our teams and with our teams.”
