Market festival a marked success

On Aug. 2, the Meade County Farmers’ Market celebrated Kentucky Farmers’ Market Week in a big way.

They went beyond their usual offerings of fresh produce, herbs, flowers and baked goods and hosted the Meade County Farmers’ Market Festival in conjunction with the Meade County Cooperative Extension Service, Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association, Webb’s Butcher Block and Roberts’ Family Farm.

Extension agents Jennifer Bridge and Andy Mills and EFNEP assistant Loretta Skaggs prepared a scrumptious meal of smoked brisket, brats, a variety of salads, vegetables, desserts and homemade ice cream. Donna Fackler from the Meade County Public Library was on hand to share information about the library’s services. Paul Priest & Friends lent their musical talents to the festive atmosphere. And Culligan of Corydon provided bottled water for the event.

The day began well and continued along the same vein with a steady stream of regular market patrons and others stopping in for the festival. The Pike Family Farm had brought a pickup truck filled with corn and had sold out within the first 45 minutes. John Pike then returned to the farm and picked another truckload which was then nearly emptied by the end of the festival. The delicious corn salad prepared by Jennifer Bridge may have had a little something to do with the run on corn.

In addition to the regular market vendors, several new vendors gave the Meade County Farmers’ Market a try and seemed inclined to return. After a slow start because of a cool, wet spring, the market is continuing to grow and offer more items with each week. Hours for the market are Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon, and Tuesdays, 1-5 p.m. The market is located in the parking lot at the Meade County Extension Service, 1041 Old Ekron Road, Brandenburg.
