Christmas by the River

The United States flag, – brightly illuminated with red, white and blue lights – recognizing the soldiers serving overseas and at home, made a return appearance at this year’s Christmas by the River.
The flag had been “out of commission” following a windstorm and other damage after the 2007 event, but thanks to the tireless efforts of city Department of Works employees, was outfitted and ready to shine again.

Sponsors of this year’s kick-off events are Brandenburg Telephone Company, First Federal Savings Bank, Fort Knox Federal Credit Union, Meade County Bank, Meade County Fiscal Court, the Meade County Messenger, Meade County RECC, the News Standard, WMMG Radio and WVIH.com Radio.

Brandenburg’s Riverfront Park came to life Nov. 28, as throngs of residents listened to holiday carols, enjoyed hot chocolate, food and had the opportunity to visit craft vendors and tell Santa and Mrs. Claus they were nice all year.

Music throughout the day was provided by the Meade County High School Madrigal singers, the Carlea Brothers, Tru Steel, By the Book, and the Bethel United Methodist Church choir.

Santa and Mrs. Claus were escorted into the park by Boy Scout Pack 150 of Brandenburg, fire department families and the Meade County Fire Protection District.

City events coordinator Amy Haynes said 128 free instant pictures were taken of children. In addition, the Citizens on Patrol organization generated about $1,300 from their silent auction, which featured baked goods, merchant donations and handmade quilts.

The lighted displays will be showcased through Jan. 1 from 5:30 p.m. to midnight daily. A donation box at the end of the event seeks contributions to defray event costs this year and provide seed money for the future. Haynes said total contributions for the day were $331.50, which was $117 ahead of last year’s figures.

An estimated total of 2,500 to 3,000 people attended the opening ceremonies and events far into the evening, Haynes said.
