String of burglaries strike county

A trail of coins, a broken door frame and a stolen safe are all that remain from an early morning Jan. 12 burglary at Margaret’s Restaurant.

Investigation by the Brandenburg City Police is continuing into the incident, which was reported to city police officers about 8:19 a.m. that morning.

City Police Chief Jeff Cox said this is another in a rash of burglaries which have occurred locally, but acknowledged city residents have been immune from the thefts – until this point.

Restaurant owner Margaret Brown said when she opened the facility she had noticed the pennies on the floor along with pieces of the door, but she did not notice the safe was missing from an interior office.

“I called the cops and then saw that the safe was gone,” she said. She added Cox was the one who noticed the rear window was broken out, theorizing that was how the culprits gained entry.

In addition to about $40 in cash, miscellaneous papers and the key to a pop machine, the safe also contained endorsed checks from country club members for their dues payments, Brown said. Cox and country club board chairman Bill Lowther encouraged those members who have paid their dues and have not seen their checks clear their banks to re-issue it again.

As far as Brown could determine, nothing else was taken from the restaurant, and she planned on opening for lunch later that day.

Cox theorized it took two men to lift the safe out the window and followed the drag marks to where it was hauled away.

Residents with further information are asked to call the Brandenburg City Police department at (270) 422-4981.
