Serious accident on KY 1638 sends two to hospital
One woman was airlifted, and her daughter was taken by ambulance following a collision with a truck around 1 p.m. Friday, June 11.
Cheryl Cade, 47, Brandenburg, was driving her 16-year old daughter to the courthouse to take a test to get her driving permit, said officers with the Meade County Sheriff’s Department.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said Cade was westbound at the 3900 block of KY 1638 near the Madison’s Texaco station, when her red 1993 Ford Taurus crossed the centerline. It hit a 1987 Freightliner semi-truck driven by 57-year-old Dennis “Bim” Wardrip, Brandenburg. Cade’s daughter told officers that her mother, a cancer patient, had fallen asleep at the wheel.
“She came around the curve heading straight at me,” described Wardrip. “I tried to swerve out the way, but couldn’t.”
Cade was evacuated by an Air Methods helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital in what was described as critical condition. Her daughter was transported by ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital by the Meade County EMS. Wardrip and his wife, Beverly, refused transport but were evaluated at the scene.
Also responding to the scene were the Meade County and Muldraugh fire departments, and the Muldraugh Police Department.
Cade was still in critical condition Monday.
