Greenwaves give it their all during
3rd Region Duals tournament at MCHS
The Meade County Greenwave wrestling team competed in the 3rd Region Duals tournament Jan. 16. Family, friends and fans cheered on their favorite wrestlers in the Meade County High School gymnasium.
The regional tournament is based on team competition rather than individuals. Besides Meade County, several region teams participated. The top teams to qualify in this tournament will move on to state competition in Lexington. Eight regions – consisting of two teams from each region – will compete in the state tournament.
During a long break in the regional tournament, Greenwave Coach Bob Davis talked about his team.
“We’re pretty strong in this region,” he said. “Right now we’re sitting at number two.” He continued, “They (the team) seems focused right now. But when you have large breaks, you lose a little focus and then you have to get back into it.” He added with a grin, “And, of course, you’ve got a big, loud-mouthed guy like me over there hollerin’ and won’t let them have the opportunity to give anything up! You know, I don’t want to lose and I don’t want them to lose. So we establish a winning attitude. We’re not going to win them all. There’s mistakes always made. Sometimes we capitalize on the mistakes and fix them. But sometimes we get caught with the mistakes and end up getting trapped and getting pinned and give up some points.”
“The thing the kids do not want to do in this competition is get on their backs. They don’t want to get pinned because if they do, they give the other team six points. So we don’t want our boys being pinned. But then again, we want to get as many pins as we possibly can. So that’s what our goal is,” he explained. “Now, when we get to individual competition, they’re out there just to win. If they win by one point, they’ve won, they advance. And that’s what you’ll see when we go to state. You don’t see a lot of pins when we go to state.”
Coach Davis has been coaching the wrestling team for four years. He is very in tune with his team. He knows all of their strengths as well as their weaknesses. His assistant coaches – Eli Dix, Josh Trotter and Erin Payne – are also an important part of the Greenwave team.
“Tyler Crow is the strongest I’ve got on the team right now,” he said. “He’s undefeated at 215 pounds. He’s starting to come into his game. He’s starting to do things that he needs to do. I’ve got some strong seniors. Outside of Tyler, I’ve got my 119-pounder, which is Dillon Pike. I’ve got my 125-pounder which is – well, he’s a junior – but Brandon Scott. Very solid.” He continued, “My 130-pounder, he’s pretty solid. That’s James Childress. He’s a good wrestler. He’s a sophomore and he’s coming along and getting strong.”
Then he spoke about 7th-grader, Chris Abernathy. “I’ve got a 7th-grader wrestling now at 103 pounds. He’s pretty solid. I mean, if he’s not a state champion within two or three years, I’ll be shocked.”
The Greenwave wrestling team is ranked as 18th in the state. When the team started out, they were 53rd the first year; the second year, they were ranked 33rd and in 2009, they ranked in the top 20.
Coach Davis is extremely optimistic about their ranking this year. “I predict this year that we will rank in the top 10,” he said.
Meade County finished the tournament in second place.
