Exploring New Dimensions at NYFF: Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Documentary Short

Known for its rich history of hosting premieres of internationally acclaimed films, NYFF is now venturing into the realm of film production with the launch of the NYFF Encounters initiative. This endeavor encourages directors showcasing their films at the festival to create new short films, which will debut at the next festival edition.

"South of Tehran": A Cinematic Encounter
This year, the festival is set to premiere "South of Tehran," a documentary short by Kleber Mendonça Filho, which captures insightful conversations between him and Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. This eight-minute film was shot during their attendance at last year’s NYFF, where Panahi’s "It Was Just an Accident" and Mendonça Filho’s "The Secret Agent" were featured. Inspired by Agnès Varda’s 1967 short film about Pier Paolo Pasolini, Mendonça Filho’s work aims to encapsulate the spontaneous and dynamic interactions typical of the festival backdrop.
A Historical Archive in the Making
Dennis Lim, the artistic director of NYFF, expressed his vision for these commissioned films to serve as enduring records of the festival’s lively and spontaneous moments, much like their iconic poster collection. These films are intended to not only capture the essence of NYFF’s atmosphere but also contribute to a historical archive that reflects the festival’s ongoing legacy.
A Filmmaker’s Challenge
Mendonça Filho shared his enthusiasm about the project, noting that the idea for his next film was proposed by Dennis Lim as a creative challenge, which he gladly accepted. The opportunity to film "South of Tehran" at last year’s NYFF was a unique experience that Mendonça Filho cherishes, and he looks forward to this year’s screening.
The 64th New York Film Festival, running from September 25 to October 12, continues to foster a unique space where filmmakers and cinephiles converge, celebrating cinema and creating new works that reflect the vibrant spirit of NYFF.
