After nine months buried under snow, the bodies of five climbers have been found on Nepal’s Yalung Ri mountain, including a German national, confirmed by a local mayor.
The Long Wait Ends in Heartbreak
The mayor of Gaurishankar, Biswash Karki, revealed to AFP that a group of climbers, last seen in November while ascending the 5,630-meter-high Yalung Ri in Eastern Nepal, has been tragically discovered deceased. This group, composed of diverse nationalities including a German, an Italian, an Italian-Canadian, and two Nepalese, met their demise following a sudden avalanche that engulfed their base camp.

Originally, the incident reported seven fatalities, and the adverse weather conditions at nearly 5,000 meters altitude significantly hampered the search and rescue operations.

Continuous efforts by the army, police, and local rescue teams to locate the missing climbers were thwarted as their bodies remained concealed under thick layers of snow, explained Mayor Karki. It wasn’t until this Thursday that the bodies were discovered by locals and rescue teams, visible due to the melting snow. Plans to airlift the bodies are pending, awaiting improved weather conditions.
