Box Office Buzz: Pattinson’s “Primetime” and the Return of “Avengers: Endgame”
As the weekend box office heats up, Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Chris Hansen in A24’s “Primetime” has garnered a promising $2.7 million in preview showings. The film, which delves into the darker side of reality TV, is expected to rake in between $16 million and $20 million during its opening weekend. Given its modest production budget of $15 million, “Primetime” is well-positioned for a profitable theatrical run.

Comparatively, Brad Pitt’s latest film “Heart of the Beast,” despite positive reviews and a gripping survival narrative, earned $2 million in previews. With a hefty production budget of $82 million, the film’s financial success hinges on sustained interest from older demographics and strong word-of-mouth, especially under the conservative marketing strategies of its distributor, Paramount, post its 2025 acquisition by David Ellison.
Despite stiff competition, neither “Primetime” nor “Heart of the Beast” is expected to surpass the box office numbers of the “Resident Evil” reboot or the re-release of “Avengers: Endgame.” The latter, titled “Avengers: Endgame Encore,” impressively pulled in $3.8 million in Thursday previews alone and is projected to earn between $25 million and $28 million over the weekend.
A24 Leads Summer Box Office Success
A24, the studio behind "Primetime," continues to experience a banner year. Following the monumental success of “Backrooms,” which became the studio’s highest-grossing film ever with earnings of $237 million, A24 has managed to outperform both Paramount and Warner Bros. during the summer. Paramount closed the season with $192 million, while Warner Bros. lagged behind with $165 million in ticket sales.

Robert Pattinson’s Career High and Oscar Buzz
Riding high on some of the best reviews of his career for “Primetime,” Pattinson’s portrayal of Hansen has not gone without controversy. Chris Hansen himself criticized the film, labeling it as “identity theft” despite not having seen it. Amidst a crowded field that includes performances by Matt Damon in “The Odyssey,” John Malkovich in “Wild Horse Nine,” Ryan Gosling in “Project Hail Mary,” and John Turturro in “The Only Living Pickpocket in New York,” it remains uncertain if Pattinson will secure an Oscar nomination.
The ongoing narrative of this year’s box office not only highlights the success of individual films but also underscores the shifting dynamics within the industry, particularly in how films are marketed and the evolving strategies of movie studios under new management. As audiences continue to support a diverse range of films, the industry’s adaptability and responsiveness to viewer preferences will be crucial in sustaining its recovery and growth post-pandemic.
