Netflix brings an AI-powered picker to TVs

Netflix is rolling out a new feature called AI Discover that uses artificial intelligence to help viewers figure out what to watch. The option appears as a new tab in the streamer’s television app and is designed to guide users through choices rather than leaving them to endlessly browse the catalog.

How the tool helps you choose

AI Discover centers on themes: you select a mood or category and are shown short preview clips that represent each option. Examples of the sorts of prompts you might pick include wanting “Something Light,” “Scare Me,” family-friendly fare, popular picks, or quick watches. Based on your choices the system suggests titles, offers ways to refine those picks, and lets you “Tune Your Recommendations” — either saving a suggestion or telling the system to avoid recommending it again.

You don’t type queries into this feature. Because it’s built for TV remotes, interaction is handled through a series of pre-selected buttons and options rather than an open text chat or chatbot interface.

Limits and availability

At launch AI Discover is available to a limited number of U.S. members who use English on supported TV platforms. It won’t appear in kids’ profiles, and it’s not yet present on mobile devices. Netflix marks the feature in the app with a gem-style icon and a “New” label; broader availability is expected in the coming weeks.

What Netflix says about data and creative use

Netflix stresses that data collected by AI Discover won’t be used to steer future production decisions. The company also distinguishes this feature from plain search: it’s built on a predictive intelligence model that operates in real time, continues to adapt to user preferences, and sits on top of the existing search experience rather than replacing it.

Context: why the streamer is trying this

Netflix’s reputation has long rested on recommendation algorithms that can turn modest, low-hype programs into breakout sensations — a phenomenon often dubbed the “Netflix Effect.” Shows such as Baby Reindeer, Adolescence, Squid Game, Ginny & Georgia and Stranger Things are examples of titles that gained enormous audiences through the platform’s recommendation engine.

Still, the company has faced challenges keeping viewers consistently engaged and helping them find their next favorite show. To address that, Netflix recently changed its creative leadership and is now experimenting with AI-driven product changes like AI Discover to make selection feel quicker and more personalized.

Technical framing

Netflix describes AI Discover as more than a branded search layer: it’s a new piece of technology that leverages predictive models to respond instantly to user input and refine suggestions as you interact. The interaction model avoids freeform chat and instead relies on curated choices and visual previews to make the experience TV-friendly.

What to watch for next

For now the experience is limited, but Netflix plans an expanded rollout. Keep an eye on the TV app if you’re in the U.S. and using an eligible device; the company says more members will see AI Discover in the weeks ahead.
