Doe Valley street name changes official; E-911 readdressing continues throughout county

Due to unforeseen circumstances related to system updates and a United States Postal Service national audit, the official readdressing of Doe Valley that was supposed to occur by Aug. 1 has just now taken place. New address notifications have been sent to all Doe Valley residents indicating their new house addresses.

The readdressing was completed to correspond with Meade County’s implementation of fully enhanced, county-wide Enhanced 911 emergency services. E-911 is designed to quickly connect those who dial 911 with Meade County’s trained dispatchers who route the call to the proper county emergency medical, fire, or law enforcement agency. E-911 is a vital aspect of Meade County’s emergency response system, providing emergency assistance quickly and effectively in an effort to save lives.

All Doe Valley residents should have received notification of their new house number, and a number of residents not only have a new house number but a new street name as well. Twenty-five street names were changed as a result of either duplication within the county or street names so similar there was the potential for confusion. Any property owners who have not received an address change notification should contact 911 director Mark Bennett at 422-4182 during business hours.

Effective immediately, Doe Valley residents should affix their new house numbers on mailboxes and adjacent to the front door of their home. The Brandenburg postmaster has sent notices to all Doe Valley residents telling them to disregard previous instructions from Ken Wilson, general manager of Doe Valley Homeowners Association, that indicated people must move their mailbox if it is located on the driveway side of the home instead of the more typical front door location. USPS advises mailboxes do not have to be relocated, and it is only necessary for Doe Valley residents to change the street numbers on the mailboxes as well as on their homes.

Brandenburg Post Office is informed of all Doe Valley readdressing information, and Doe Valley property owners are not required to fill out change of address packets. What is extremely necessary, however, is for all Doe Valley residents who are Brandenburg Telephone Company customers to immediately notify Brandenburg Telephone Company of their change of address. E-911 personnel stress the importance of notifying the telephone company so that addresses are all properly recorded in the appropriate telephone database that works hand in hand with the new E-911 system.

The E-911 staff is currently in the process of readdressing the city of Brandenburg. Most of the readdressing has been completed with the exception of Broadway, since E-911 personnel must first determine how Hwy 313 will connect into the city and affect addressing.

The city of Muldraugh is also currently being readdressed, with some street name changes being recommended.

The Meade County 911 Center is utilizing the U.S. Postal Rural Interval Addressing System, which has been used in Meade County for a number of years. This 5.28 feet scale addressing – a new address assigned every 5.28 feet – allows for future county growth.

Both 911 director Mark Bennett and E-911 consultant Bill Lacey can’t stress enough how important it is for everyone to have numbers on their homes and located in a visible place. “If we can’t find you when an emergency arises,” they cautioned, “we can’t help you.”
