Health Department construction underway

Following an arduous design, bidding and grant application process, construction on the addition to the Meade County Health Department has begun. Work began Oct. 24, on the heels of an Oct. 19 preconstruction meeting. Completion is slated for early summer in 2006. Click Here For Full Story


More digging in store for Riverport Authority

The Meade County Riverport Authority’s Nov. 1 regular meeting began with an update from Ed Walker with Garver Engineering. Walker advised the underwater study had revealed no endangered mussel studies or habitats. That study has now been filed with the Corps of Engineers and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. Doe Valley street name changes official; E-911 readdressing continues throughout county

Due to unforeseen circumstances related to system updates and a United States Postal Service national audit, the official readdressing of Doe Valley that was supposed to occur by Aug. 1 has just now taken place. Operation Christmas Child underway; collection week is Nov. 14-21

Meade County Public Library serves all ages

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Library Director James Mitchell met in a special called meeting with Trustees Sandra Stone, Joe Sipes, Tony Black, Ruth Fisk and Debbie Jones to discuss monthly business. The treasurer’s report showed a checking account balance of $111,516.66. CD’S totaled $162,897.06.

The Meade County Board of Adjustments held its monthly meeting on Nov. 2, with board members Jess Mills, Joe Hobbs, and Louis Crawford present.

Firefighters pass National Firefighter Certification Testing Program

Eight firefighters from the Meade County Fire District and one from the Ekron Fire-Rescue Department took part in the firefighter skills testing held Oct. 22 and 23 at the Bowen fire training complex at Elizabethtown Community College. The International Fire Service Accredidation Congress (IFSAC), in conjunction with Kentucky Community Technical College System (KCTCS), provides both skill and written testing to a national standard for firefighters. This program has been in use in Kentucky for approximately five years and is designed to insure the firefighter has both skills and knowledge concerning their profession. The IFSAC test is based on skills and does not differ for career or non-career firefighters taking the test. Click Here For Full Story


Teenagers and nutrition

Teens have the freedom to make their own choices, are eating out more often, visiting fast food restaurants more often, and getting their lunches from school vending machines. Expecting teenagers to bring a brown bag lunch to school or to snack on carrot sticks when everyone else is eating chips probably is not realistic. Adolescence seems to be synonymous with erratic eating habits as the typical teenager’s life fills up with friends, sports and homework. Yet adolescence is also a time of rapid growth and development that makes healthy eating habits even more important. Therefore, it is critically important that teenagers are encouraged to make nutritious food choices.
